Welcome to Five Minute Marketing.


My name is Todd and I'm going to go over in five minutes an actionable step that you can do to help your business.


I help small businesses with their email marketing, copywriting, website stuff, all that.


But today, we're gonna focus on one thing in each video. We're gonna focus on one thing with marketing you can put into use today to help your business.


So today we're gonna talk about email marketing since that's kind of my forte as well as copywriting, but email marketing is also one of the most important aspects of business.


A lot of smaller businesses, especially independent businesses, don't have an email list or if they do I find that they don't use it at all.


They don't know how to use it.


They've collected it.


You got people sitting on your list for years and years so what do you do about that?


How do you turn them into customers? How do you turn them into actually raving fans?

Which is what the goal of an email list is.


So the main thing is with an email list you want to build a relationship.


Just like you have customers coming into your business.


If you do, or you have customers you contact on a regular basis, so they contact you either by phone, through on the social media platforms, or something like that. Email's no different except for the fact that you actually own that asset.


You own the email list and you can save it to your computer or whatever.


Just think if you had a Facebook Page, unless your customers were on Facebook, on that page, and Facebook decided to block you or ban you, which happens quite often. You lose them and it would take forever probably to get them back.


Email is something you can control.


The other thing is pretty much everybody has email so asking for an email address is pretty common nowadays especially. Most people have one and if they don't then you really don't need them on your list anyway, and they are probably not a good customer fit for you unless you're doing some kind of outlying business.


So how do you kind of create a an email real quick?


Let's talk about that, the subject line - probably the most important part of the email because you've got to get somebody to actually read it. Right?


You want to do something that's kind of out of the ordinary but obviously you don't want to offend anybody or go too far. But you want to put something that will stop them in their track.


You don't want to be just oh here's a 20% discount, or please join my newsletter, or whatever.


No, you need something a little bit more catchy than that.


Obviously, you want it text based.


Pictures and all that are great but honestly they don't work very well and even if you're selling ecomm.


When I work with some ecomm businesses I try to persuade them to do text based with maybe one picture of one product. So you could do that if need be.


You want to write like you talk. You don't want to be fancy. This isn't English class. You're not getting a grade.


You want to use short sentences. Kind of punchy, pithy, that kind of stuff.


And at the end you want a call to action.


So you want to say please buy this product, please go to my store, go here, go there, do this, do that. You want some kind of call to action.


You could have several but probably most important just have one.


And then the other thing is how often should you email your list?


Well, if you haven't used the list in a while, or never, then you want to create a newsletter about your business for that particular month and send it out.


It can be sent out anytime, it doesn't have to be the first part of the month.


Then you also want to work your way into emailing more often. So let's say send out a newsletter every month for a couple months, and then work your way into maybe sending out an email every week or two weeks with some business updates.


Could be products you have coming in, new services, new employees, something something new, or changed, or even just "hey, this is the stuff that we have that we haven't focused on before. You should probably check it out".


And then the main goal is you want to get to the point where you're emailing several times a week.


I know people freak over that because "oh they're going to get off my list".


Well, maybe so, but maybe not.


What I find mostly is that people stay on the list, especially if you are conversational and have a little bit of personality in your emails, they'll want to stick around and see what you say next.


So you want to get to that point.


And that's when you start building close relationships and that's when people start using you talking about you, referring you, and that's the main goal...
